How much noise is too much in an apartment?
Honestly, you can’t define exactly what is considered normal apartment noise. Whether or not noise is normal depends on your neighbors, when the sound or noise is generated, the object making the noise, and where you are located. In fact, you can hear a variety of normal noise all day.
What is considered normal apartment noise?
There is the expected and acceptable noise. These are the things you probably hear every day that I consider “normal”. More often than not, you could care less about them, and they wouldn’t bother you in your daily life.

- loud drilling noise in the apartment

- water flowing through the pipes
- short knock on the wall

- Toilet pumping sound
- Neighbors walking softly in a wooden structure house
- Low TV\music or conversation sounds
There are some noises above that would no longer be normal noise if they were at night.
Also, if your hearing or perception is higher than normal, then almost any noise is not a normal noise to you.
What is considered excessive noise in an apartment?
- Hitting the wall
- Screaming and shouting
- Door slamming with force
- The picture on your wall rattling
- Glass shattering
- The endless barking of dogs
- Sirens
- Electric drills in the middle of the night
- Endless treadmill or drill noise
There is nothing you can do about the normal apartment noise, you can only get used to it, accept it and ignore it.
For excessive noise in an apartment, I suggest you check the city noise ordinance to see if it violates some law or code and complain to the apartment manager.
